San Diego
Day 16 ~ Travel Day – Today was a tough drive. The traffic from north of Los Angeles all the way to San Diego was ridiculous. We just crawled along for hours. We took 101 which is a toll road which was very confusing. We were not really sure how to pay the tolls and will have to research the whole thing. There are no rest areas at all between Morro Bay and San Diego. It waw a very long day.
Ww arrived at Sun Outdoors San Diego, our rv park and got checked in without any issues. The park is a resort, very nice, lots of amenities. a first for us. Starlink had a wide open sky view and Verizon is adequate with 2 bars.
Day 17 ~ Sand Diego Zoo We spent the day at the San Diego Zoo. We were pretty spent after dealing with traffic and walking around the zoo. Not much else to report today.
Day 18 ~ Biking Bay Shore Trail. There is a bike trail right outside the RV park so we researched it and found a route tht goes around the south end and west side of San Diego Bay to Coronado. we passed a South bay Salt Works which was quite interesting to see. At Coronado there is a pedestrian/bike ferry that goes to either the San Diego Convention Center or Bradway Ave. We took the ferry to the convention center area. the ferry landining is on tthe Embarcadero. The area there is very nice. we saw a very large yacht parked there which Liz looked up. It is 234′ long and is owned by Larry Van Tuyl, a man that made his money in an automotive dealerships group which he sold for 4.1 billion dollars.
We needed some butter so we decided to make a stop at a nearby Albertsons. We left the Embarcadero and rode into the cithyentering Barrio Logan. This was a pretty sketchy area and we were glad to be out of there. The ride back to the rv park was not awesome. The route went down Harbor Drive, a big industrial area before skirting the marshes where we encountered a large number of homeless camps and the trash that always goes along with that.
We got back to the trailer and did some laundry. The bike ride was great until we left the Embarcadero. The afternoon was very hot and humid.
Day 19 ~ Balboa Park We drove back to the zoo area and explored Balboa Park. After parking and walking into the park, our initial reaction was that the park was very run down and almst had an abandoned feel to it. As we progressed further it got better and we saw some interesting things. The Botanical House was pretty amazing. The rose gardens wer nice and there was an awesome cactus garden. The Japanese Garden was quite large but not too interesting. Balboa Park is worth seing but there is a lot of are that nees some updating or restoring.
After the park we stopped by a Whole Foods and picked up some groceries before heading back to the trailer to chill a bit. Finding parking is a bit of a challenge with a truck in San Diego. Another very hot day.
Day 20 ~ No Agenda We didn’t have ny real plans for the daqy today. We had a leisurely morning and then wnet just oputside the rv park to explore Sweetwater Park. This park is a great place to see native vegetation that is maintained nicely. There are a lot of trails that run through the park. It was a nice way to start the day before it got too hot. While exploring the park we decided to go to the Living Coast Discovery Center that is adjacent to Sweetwater Park and the Wildlife Refuge. All thre are withing walking distance of each other. THe discovery Center had some interesting things, the Eagles and hawks in rapture lane were pretty cool.
We had a quiet afternoon and prepared for a travel day tomorrow.
