Morro Bay

Day 13 ~Travel day. It was a fairly short drive to Morro Bay although the road was rather rough. The road from 101 to Morro Bay is extremely windy and narrow. We were glad it wasnt that road the entire way.

After setting up we drove into town and parked so we could walk around town and get a feel for the area. Morro Bay is a fairly small town and has a nice little downtown area. There is the main downtown and then the water front with a bunch of small shops, galleries and restaurants. There is a boardwalk sort of thing along the water that we travelled, checking out the area and seeing all the seals and sea lions. Some area were quite smelly though.

Day 14 ~ Biking and Exploring. There is a trail that goes from just beyond our rv park that goes into town. We took the e-bikes and rode into town to Scout, a coffee shop we saw yesterday. After our coffee stop, we rode through town to Morro Rock. We saw a raft of sea otters out at the rock. They were fun to watch as they floated around on their backs. There were a couple of guys there that had spotting scopes aimed at a Peregrine Falcon and were letting everyone take a look.

After exploring on bikes we decided to take the truck to Morro Bay State Park and check out the boarwalk and the estuary area. We stopped at the Heron Rookery, and while the heron nesting season was over, it wqs interesting to see all the cormorants and egrets. the boardwalk was an interesting walk and we saw egrets and pelicans as we walked.

Day 15 ~ Hearst Castle  Some friends had told us about the Hearst Castle and said we should see it while in Morro bay so we purchased tickets for a couple of the tours. We did the Main Rooms Tour and the Upstairs Rooms Tour. I would describe the experienc as ‘interesting and appalling at the same time’. It was pretty interesting to see and the grounds and learn about it all, but the flagrant display of wealth and the gaudiness of the estate was rather distasteful.  All in all we were glad we took the time to check it out, but what we came away with is a real illustration of just how ridiculous the wealthy live.

After the castle tours we drove up the coast a few miles to see the elephant seals. we had not seen elephant seals before, they are huge! After seeing the seals we stopped by  Cambria and walked part of the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk there before getting a bite to eat at Linn’s, which was recommended by a person that we met at the Hearst castle. The food was mediocre and the service was terrible. I do not recommend it. Cambria is a nice little town and we were disappointed at our food choice.

We finished out the day preparing for a travel day to San Diego.
